Channel Your Favorite Character from Jane the Virgin

'Jane the Virgin' Banner

Today is the day: One of our favorite shows, Jane the Virgin ,is back, returning to the CW on Mondays at 9/8c! To get psyched and ready for the arrival of Jane and company to our television screens, we’ve come up with a guide to channel the signature makeup look of your favorite characters from the show.

'Jane' Leading Ladies

Jane, the titular character, is our heroine of course.  A mother to the always-adorable Mateo, she has strict morals and a big heart. She juggles motherhood and  job on top of being student writer who dreams of being a romance novelist. Recently married to the love of her life, Michael, she always remains herself (or at least tries to), no matter what life throws at her.

To convey Jane’s rosy outlook on life, we want to go with a look that’s sweet yet practical. She doesn’t have too much time to spend on her hair and makeup, so classics are a must. For her hair, a high-pony with a curl on the tip is both fast and cute, but not so much so that we can’t be taken seriously. As far as her makeup, something that takes minimal effort but still leaves behind a radiant glow is perfect. Opt for peach tones and brown tones.

As for what to wear, we don’t think we’ve ever seen Jane in anything but a dress. You can probably go into your closet and find a cute, casual dress, or even better, find some new pink threads at Target (Jane’s favorite store of course, and let’s be honest, ours too), and you’re all set – you’ve got your Jane look down!

Xiomara, better known as Xo, might be both Jane’s mother and Mateo’s abuela, but that doesn’t put her in box! She has big dreams, is a performer at heart, and is in the process of opening her own business, a dance studio. She is also quite the romantic, but definitely a bit more seasoned than Jane. She knows what she wants and what she doesn’t and is willing to fail to fulfill her dreams.

When it comes to makeup like Xo, think bright and shiny. You don’t want want to take your makeup full on Chula-style, but we’re still going to use lots of color and glitter. Light colors on the eyes will match better with Xo’s more signature darker lip colors (perhaps a deep purple). As for hair, opt for a loose scrunch to show off a freestyle vibe, but if you have hair that falls a little flat, you can use a flat iron to make it a bouncier. For an outfit, either go with the most sparkling thing or most colorful in your wardrobe and don’t be afraid to go short, because remember, Xo is a performer and is always putting on a show.

Petra is your villain turned good girl, a cunning and bright girl with a chip on her shoulder. Having recently been relieved from Locked-In Syndrome and taking back her place as the rightful Petra, she’s gone back to her old ways. However, she has always been very professional, if not two-faced (and we do mean literally if you count Aneska).

For a makeup look worthy of Petra, you definitely want a look that says HBIC. Petra always looks very put together, so this is not a quick makeup look. Think absolute perfection, with perfectly pink lips and perfectly highlighted cheeks. Of course, since she has a dark side, you definitely want a little drama. A brown smoke-out is edgy without being too severe, and you can add more depth by lining your lower lash line a deep blue.

For her hair, Petra usually maintains a perfect blowout. However, if you find that difficult, curling your ends can also give off the “Don’t mess with me” vibe we have come to expect from Petra. She’s always dressed in blues and teals to highlight her eyes, but always in a high fashion, professional way. That can mean wearing a designer dress or an amazing blouse paired with a pencil skirt or cigarette pant.

Alba may look and feel like your very loving abuela, but she has a steamy past and hasn’t always the perfect church-loving woman we’ve come to love. Luckily, we have seen her sister’s younger self and Alba on her own wedding day, letting us know that she was a fun-loving young woman during the swinging sixties in Venezuela. And sure, she may be in her swinging sixties (okay, probably in her seventies), but she still has a loving, headstrong personality with more than just a hint of sass.

To channel your inner Alba, opt for a sophisticated, muted look that shows off just a hint of flirtatiousness. We’re thinking a full on cat-eye and perhaps a come-hither flower in flawlessly curled hair. Of course, she still has the image of “the perfect sister,” so clothing is still demure and stays very feminine. Oh, and make sure you have your cross necklace in plain sight.
